Ask someone who lives here what summer in Sun Prairie means and you will hear "Corn Fest" first. Fair enough. Eighty tons of buttered sweet corn tends to dominate the mental calendar. What gets missed is the eleven weeks that lead up to it, most of them routed through the same three blocks downtown. Cannery Square has quietly turned into a seven-day-a-week civic room, and the summer schedule is built around it. Once you see the pattern, the season stops being one August weekend and starts being a rhythm.
The Saturday That Sets the Week
The Sun Prairie Farmers Market opens outdoors at 7 a.m. every Saturday from May 2 through October 31, running until noon on Cannery Square and Market Street. This is the market's 40th season, launched on Saturday, May 2, 2026, which is not a small anniversary for a downtown weekly.
Two things about the 2026 season worth knowing if you have been going for years and assume nothing changes:
- The market is presented this year by Salvatore's Tomato Pies, the first named title sponsorship in recent memory.
- Community events land on the third Saturday of each month, with live music weekly and family activities on the schedule.
That third-Saturday cadence is the piece most residents miss. It means June 20, July 18, and August 15 carry programming that a normal Saturday does not, and August 15 lands the weekend before Corn Fest as a natural on-ramp. If you have been treating the market as a produce run, this is the year to stay for the second hour.
There is also a smaller midweek option that a lot of newer residents do not know exists. The West Main Street market runs out of the Saint Vinny's parking lot at 1110 West Main, positioned as a midweek stop with quick access to every booth. It is the market to hit when you forgot something on Saturday.
The Weeknight Layer
Cannery Square is the anchor, but the weeknight calendar spreads out.
Community Band pop-ups. The Sun Prairie Area Community Band's Pop-Up concert series returned for 2026 as a volunteer group offering free performances around Sun Prairie and nearby communities. "Pop-up" is the operative word. These are not fixed-location concerts on the same lawn every week, so following the city calendar matters more than assuming.
The pool opens later than you would guess. The Family Aquatic Center at 920 Linnerud Dr held its opening day on July 9, 2026. If you had July 4 weekend on the pool schedule mentally, you were about a week early. Worth noting for families still adjusting to the calendar.
Pickleball has a season now. The Madtown Pickleball Open runs July 10 at Wyndham Hills Community Park, and Pickleball Kingdom is running skill clinics through the summer, including a backhands clinic on July 24. Two years ago this would not have been a category. It is now.
The library is programming for adults. The Sun Prairie Public Library is hosting "Sun Prairie: Food, Farms, and Community" on Thursday, July 9 at 5 p.m. The library has been leaning into evening adult programming, and this one ties directly to the market and Corn Fest narrative running through the rest of the summer.
Kids Fest at Dream Park. Explore Children's Museum's 2026 Kids Fest is Saturday, July 25 at Sun Prairie Dream Park. Circle it if you have anyone under ten.
The Weekend to Actually Plan Around
August 19 through 23. The 73rd Annual Sweet Corn Festival is held at Angell Park in Sun Prairie, and if you have lived here more than a season you know the rhythm. If you are newer, the five-day structure is more layered than "go get corn on Saturday."
Here is what actually happens across the five days, because the schedule matters if you are trying to plan around road closures and parking:

A few things residents who go every year still get wrong.
The corn is only cooked on Saturday and Sunday. The Corn Building is open from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, while supplies last, and the boiler-steam cooking process is cost prohibitive to run for just a couple of hours on Thursday or Friday. If you show up Thursday expecting hot buttered corn, you are getting a carnival and a beer instead.
Pricing changed. Cooked corn totes on Saturday and Sunday run $15 in cash or $16 by credit card. The corn hasn't been free since 1979, which is a fact worth keeping in your back pocket for anyone who complains.
The parade sponsor matters. The Sweet Corn Festival Parade and Block Party is presented by One Community Bank, and the block party in Cannery Square after the Wednesday parade is where most locals actually end up. If you skip the parade, do not skip the Wednesday night follow-on.
The beneficiaries are local. The festival is coordinated by the Chamber of Commerce with several non-profits sharing in the proceeds, including the Sun Prairie VFW Post #9362, American Legion Post 333, the Exchange Club, the Lions, and the Knights of Columbus. Every corn tote is a small transfer to a group that runs the rest of the town.
The Practical Notes
If you live within walking distance of downtown, the Wednesday parade route is going to affect you. Many businesses stay open during the parade for shopping and dining, but road closures mean access to some is limited to foot traffic during the parade itself. Plan errands earlier in the day or push them to Thursday.
Parking is the other friction point. Walk-ins are $2 per entry, upper-grounds parking is $10 per car and includes entry, and no double parking is allowed. Vehicles may be towed or ticketed, which is not the way you want to end a Saturday.
One more, and it catches people every year: pets are not allowed on the fairgrounds, and certified service animals are the only exception. Leave the dog at home. This is the single most repeated frustration on the local Facebook groups the week of the festival.
Why It Matters That the Calendar Stacks This Way
The reason to notice the shape of the summer, and not just the Corn Fest weekend, is that Sun Prairie's downtown works the way it does because these events reinforce each other. The Saturday market brings a weekly foot-traffic baseline. The Sun Prairie Mural Festival ran community painting on June 18 and 20 at Dream Park, giant murals across the city June 22–26, and a mural reveal block party at Cannery Square on June 27. That put permanent art on the same walls the Corn Fest parade will pass in August. The Wednesday night Block Party after the parade lands people in Cannery Square with beer and live music from The Dirty Birds, which is the same square hosting the market twelve hours later.
Same three blocks, different program, all summer. If you know when to show up, you get a different town every weekend without ever leaving the neighborhood.

Everything else is bonus. But the bonus is the reason people who move here stay.
